The First of Many

In the land of New Year’s Resolutions, I’ve found myself gravitating to more vague, growth-centric ones. For the past two years, I’ve followed the main NYR of something new for every month of the new year. That’s 12 things and there is no limit to what they can be. Anywhere from meeting someone new, learning something new, trying something new, visiting a new place, and so on. It boils down to 12 new things to color my life with, ultimately achieving what everyone wants: a better them. Why not make each month memorable?

I’m happy to report that I’ve already accomplished my something new for January: shooting in the snow.

When snow first falls, it is SO gorgeous. Literally a beautiful, white blanket that hugs everything around it, turning it into a splendor of glistening snow. It’s sometimes hard to remember that it’s cold af. Being both the first snow of the year, I had to also make it my first snow shoot. Getting lost in the flurries of white is so mesmerizing and could honestly be the best therapy out there. I felt like a kid again staring at one of the wonders of the world.

When your world suddenly turns into a snow globe, it’s hard to imagine how things can go wrong. Shooting in the snow is certainly not an easy feat. Picture this: your body grows numb to the point where you get so cold that you turn hot. BTS was certainly funny, especially when you can’t feel your face…hands…anything. Any type of fashion sense goes out the window, unless you’re part crazy and you say things like “do it for the gram” LOL. Honestly, I’m so glad that I found these boots with the fur in the back of my closet.

And yes of course, the struggle of keeping an open jacket to show the fit…where in this case it’s a knit. You best believe that I was shivering my bones off. And to top it off, my zipper broke on this coat so the only way I can wear it is open. Talk about a built in fashion statement.

You know me and monochrome 😉 I obviously had to opt for a classic black and white look to blend in and stand out against the white. And since my coat has a faux fur hood trim, it was only fitting to place a pompom hat on top, don’t ya think?! It actually matched so well with my sweater that I almost laughed since I didn’t plan on that coordination happening.

This mini snow storm has got me thinking how  dangerously beautiful snow is. In one sense, it’s truly mesmerizing the way it paints the world a glistening white. In another it’s lethal where it can be the cause of death or injury (being frozen to death or slipping on ice, yikes). It’s life is pretty short lived too. Aside from the natural melting, us humans just go and ruin it, turning it all ugly, dirty, and disgusting slush. Makes you appreciate it even more.

January down, 11 new experiences to go.

  1. I love your perspective on NYR! Sometimes we set the bar so high that when we “fail” to reach our resolutions we feel defeated. I like the fact that it’s 12 experiences! Well one down, can’t wait to see the 11 left! This shoot in the snow sure is mesmerizing … but I feel ya for the cold haha.

  2. Ahhh this is that snow shoot you were telling me about! It’s so gorgeous. All the photos are spectacular, and you look beautiful – as always! I was glad I at least got to vlog, because I never got to take any photos before it began to melt. Hopefully next time 😉 I’m excited to see what your next 11 “resolutions” are!

  4. Haha, I recognize the part of freezing to pieces when you’re out there in the cold trying to get those great pics for your social media. Right now I think I’ve caught a cold just because of that, haha. I also love the fact of doing something new every month and will start that myself too! It sounds like a great challenge and I’m in. It also makes you enjoy life much more! 🙂

  5. I’m so jealous of that weather! Your description of the first snowfall was simply beautiful—I only visit the snow every so often (maybe once every two years) so I always love seeing images of other people enjoying it!

  7. I love your idea of having one resolution for each month of the year! It’s such an ingenious way to accomplish your goals and do something new throughout the year. This shoot is so incredibly beautiful! The falling snow makes it look so ethereal.

  8. I love your snowy photos. I absolutely miss the beautiful snow falls from back in Toronto (the weather’s pretty much same in New York City lol). I really didn’t like driving in it though. It is truly so lovely to look at from inside someplace warm, or even to walk in, but shovelling and driving isn’t really safe. I hope you have an amazing week. Enjoy the snow!

  9. I totally hear you on how cold it must be to shoot in the snow. The other day I was complaining about shooting in 20 degree weather. I could not feel my fingertips after 3 min and proceeded to wear giant gloves for the rest of the shoot even though it looked like I was wearing oven mitts haha. These photos turned out beautifully! Love the idea of trying something new each month. I might just do that too!

  10. I love this idea of doing something new each month for a NYR! I think I will adopt that in my life. These snow shots are incredible Jenn! I love them so much. There is something so magical about snow. Probably bc I live in Socal and hardly ever see it falling, I find snow breathtaking. Love your monochrome outfit and how cozy you look. Such a fun time even though you were freezing. =) xoxo, Christine
